Dan is re-joined by Bethlehem Shoals to catch up about life and the playoffs.

Of course there’s talk of LeBron’s No Good, Horrible, Very Bad Game. Along with the relative value of Twitter, go-to guys, and a long and winding (what else?) discussion of cliche in sports.

It’s a long episode, sure, but we haven’t done one in a couple of weeks. So if you take the average, we still owe you like half an episode. We’ll send you that one in the mail. Just send us a self-addressed stamped envelope and a Cheesecake Factory napkin autographed by Larry Hughes.

Songs from the episode:

“Fast and Delirious” - Lindstrom
“The Harder They Come” - Jimmy Cliff
“Power of Independent Trucking” - Big Black
“Whip You With A Strap” - Ghostface Killah
“Leave Me Alone So I Can Rock Again” - John Spencer Blues Explosion
“I Learned The Hard Way” - Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

Due to a faulty home internet connection at the Disciples of Clyde recording studio (aka my apartment) there isn’t going to be a show this week.

I’m going to go attempt not to yell at Comcast and get this thing fixed up nice. Until then, please enjoy this video.

A Final Message To Finish 2009

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

For reasons best left unexplained, I was reading old Sports Illustrated articles today, and came across the following quote from a 1967 column by Frank Deford.  While in Lawrence, Kansas, Deford ends up talking to Phog Allen, who says this:

All through the land, no matter how small the town, a basketball gym became like a city hall, like a community meeting place. That’s part of it, and the game. It’s artistic, fast, and clever. It has action and scoring. That’s what people want. And then there’s the emotion. There’s so much that I don’t think people can ever appreciate it in the right way. There’s just so much emotion.

Phog Allen knew it in 1967 as much as we do today. It’s a great time to love basketball, and it always has been.

Have a safe, happy, and healthy New Year, everyone!

In this episode, Ken and Dan are joined by Ken’s college friend Andy Manoff, who spent a year in Ethiopia and ended up teaching girls to play basketball.  Not a euphemism.  Also, Andy has a story about reading a book near an NBA player, which leads to a larger discussion of NBA books/movies (including this fine book by Alexander Wolff).

Also, Dan finds out he has a surprising number of songs with “Africa” in the title:

“Ball of Fire” - Israel Vibration
“African Children” - Aswad
“Africa Center of the World” - Fela Kuti
“African Walk (Zamunda)” - Madlib
“African Woman” - Burning Spear
“Thank You For Talkin’ To Me Africa” - Sly and the Family Stone
